How To Save Money When Customizing Your New Home

Posted on

Have you decided that you're tired of looking for your dream home and just want to build it yourself? That's why many people turn to custom homes as the solution to their problem of house hunting. Here are some ways that you can build a custom home and save money along the way.

Reduce Your Square Footage

One way to cut down on the cost of your home is by reducing the overall square footage. After all, lower square footage will result in needing less building material, which cuts down on the cost of construction. This may have you wondering how do you cut down on square footage in the best possible way?

A technique that home builders will use is to take slices out of the house in strategic places once the entire home is designed. Eliminating a foot from the width and length of a home to make the home a bit smaller can end up saving you thousands of dollars, and may not be that noticeable.

Use A Door And Window Package

Customizing a home means that you can build it exactly how you want. However, making everything customized is going to result in higher prices. It is worth asking your builder about using a door and window package, which uses more standard sizes of doors and windows to help keep things simple. Getting everything in bulk through the same dealer can also help save money as well.

With that in mind, there may be some spots where you want to make upgrades. You may want a nicer front door, while leaving the other entry doors more standard.

Limit Built-In Cabinetry

Cabinetry is an area where it is really easy to spend too much money, especially when homeowners want built-in cabinetry. Cutting back on these built-ins can save you money in a couple of ways. Those cabinets are going to be a permanent part of your home, and you may not always want them to be there. It may be better to put movable shelving instead, which can be taken with you when you sell the home. In addition, cabinetry requires special hardware, and your builders will charge more to paint cabinetry.

Future buyers may not want those built-ins, and they don't add any value to your home later on as a result. Remove the built-in cabinets, and get back the square footage of the room so you can do what you want with it.
